Frederick Douglass is a pioneer for civil rights. He believed “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom,” and this belief compelled Douglass to learn to read and write. Considering this thought, if ever we choose to reject opportunities to contemplate and learn new ideas and gain new knowledge, then do we fall victim to a sort of self inflicted enslavement? Doesn't Douglass point to the overwhelming importance of learning?
Furthermore, although not all learning and education takes place within the walls of the school house, it is a place centered on learning. My charge to you is to not waste opportunities you have to learn, especially at school. You are afforded a free education, unlike Douglass, who had to secretly educate himself amidst fear of punishment. Challenge yourself everyday to gain new knowledge or reinforce or rethink knowledge you already possess.

Yes and no. I say yes because if we turn down the opprotunity to learn, we are turning down other opprotunities for ourselves. I also say no because people who choose to reject opprotunities are expressing their own opinions.
ReplyDeleteEducation is not only important in the class but also in the real world. With out taking advantage of having an education your setting yourself up for failure
ReplyDeleteI think turning down education is enslaving yourself, because education is needed most of the time for well paying jobs and a good life.
ReplyDeleteTurning down education could be from laziness of the person, but I think turning it down is the stupidest thing you could do. You want to learn as much as you can in this life while your still here. No one can take your knowledge away once you've learned. It's yours to keep and there's no right that says you can't have it. Love what you have and what you can get with the knowledge you can spread.
ReplyDeleteTurning down education is like choosing to fail, people without education have a harder time, especially in the society we have now. Without correct counting and reading skills people could easily go nowhere in life.
ReplyDeleteShould one choose not to become educated, they merely cripple themselves, not only as a member of the workforce in the increasingly competitive job market, but as a member of society in general. Our society today continues to expand the collective intelligence of it's full population. To choose to be uneducated not only restricts that one individual, it restricts the progress of mankind as a whole, no matter how significant or insignificant one person may be.
ReplyDeleteWithout education an individual would lack important opportunities and certain knowledge of the world they live in. People who choose no education enslaved them in a state of not knowing how the real world is.

ReplyDeleteBy turning down education, an individual will lose many opportunities for a successful life and career. People should take every opportunity to learn not just from school, but for every opportunity in life. Education is certain important because no one can take it away from you and it is necessary to live in the world today.
ReplyDeleteTurning down education is basically saying, "I do not care about my well being." Without education you don't know anything. People basically have no life without knowing what's what.
ReplyDeleteBy douglass deciding to read and write is like the people that our in our society that want to exceed in life and become better presures in life. So yes if you want to turn down an education you are becoming enslaved of the future that lays ahead of you by not having the oppurtunities for jobs or the choice of little income.
ReplyDeleteNot everyone has the opportunity to learn. So in this world, learning is a gift. And those who choose not to learn are dumb. Why turn down learning? You can accomplish great things, and achieving your dreams. With learning, you can become smart and be higher in the world to get a better job that pays well. Then, have a nice house and enough money to raise a family someday.

ReplyDeleteEveryone has the right to get an eduation and if someone is denied learning it only gives them a stronger drive and the have the right to speak on their behalf even a slave that is denied those certian rights
ReplyDeleteEducation isnt there for everyone, as you said. There are many in the world today that do not have the right to learn like we do. Many people take school as a place they have to go, but we should want to go to.. not have too. Having an education is important, not for just the present... but for our future.
ReplyDeleteEducation and knowledge makes everything. Learning envelops the world together, and observation and the power of knowing what's out there helps us realize the issues we see and it aids us with the knowledge to fix them. Today, you can't even really get a job without a diploma or without being enrolled somewhere. Knowledge is so integrated into everything that makes up our lifestyle, it's an ignorance to our future if we let it pass us by. This chance only happens once, so embrace it with the importance it holds while you can. It can prove to provide alot of powerful lessons and innovative ideas and knowledge that can help us later down the road.
ReplyDeleteWithout the opportunity of education we would be left empty. People who choose not to learn choose not to live a full life in a way because everyone should learn something new everyday.
ReplyDeleteI think education and gaining knowledge is important to me because with out it, it will be hard to live in this world today. If you didnt gain knowledge then it will be hard for you to know what going on in the world. Also you need education and knowledge to get a job.
ReplyDeleteyes because without an education,we are only keeping ourselves from the opportunities we might have in the future
ReplyDeleteyes we need education. i feel that we all take education for granted especially myself... that is something i need to work on, but i will do what i can.
ReplyDeleteEducation is very important in our every day life. Without education we wouldnt have all the things that we have especially technology. Education helps us even when we dont know it is.
