Frederick Douglass-My Bondage and My Freedom

Frederick Douglass is a pioneer for civil rights. He believed “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom,” and this belief compelled Douglass to learn to read and write. Considering this thought, if ever we choose to reject opportunities to contemplate and learn new ideas and gain new knowledge, then do we fall victim to a sort of self inflicted enslavement? Doesn't Douglass point to the overwhelming importance of learning?

Furthermore, although not all learning and education takes place within the walls of the school house, it is a place centered on learning. My charge to you is to not waste opportunities you have to learn, especially at school. You are afforded a free education, unlike Douglass, who had to secretly educate himself amidst fear of punishment. Challenge yourself everyday to gain new knowledge or reinforce or rethink knowledge you already possess.

Comment on my thoughts. In your comments, reveal why you think education and gaining knowledge is important to you.

  1. Yes and no. I say yes because if we turn down the opprotunity to learn, we are turning down other opprotunities for ourselves. I also say no because people who choose to reject opprotunities are expressing their own opinions.

  4. Turning down education could be from laziness of the person, but I think turning it down is the stupidest thing you could do. You want to learn as much as you can in this life while your still here. No one can take your knowledge away once you've learned. It's yours to keep and there's no right that says you can't have it. Love what you have and what you can get with the knowledge you can spread.

  5. Turning down education is like choosing to fail, people without education have a harder time, especially in the society we have now. Without correct counting and reading skills people could easily go nowhere in life.

  6. Should one choose not to become educated, they merely cripple themselves, not only as a member of the workforce in the increasingly competitive job market, but as a member of society in general. Our society today continues to expand the collective intelligence of it's full population. To choose to be uneducated not only restricts that one individual, it restricts the progress of mankind as a whole, no matter how significant or insignificant one person may be.

  7. Without education an individual would lack important opportunities and certain knowledge of the world they live in. People who choose no education enslaved them in a state of not knowing how the real world is.

  8. By turning down education, an individual will lose many opportunities for a successful life and career. People should take every opportunity to learn not just from school, but for every opportunity in life. Education is certain important because no one can take it away from you and it is necessary to live in the world today.

  11. Not everyone has the opportunity to learn. So in this world, learning is a gift. And those who choose not to learn are dumb. Why turn down learning? You can accomplish great things, and achieving your dreams. With learning, you can become smart and be higher in the world to get a better job that pays well. Then, have a nice house and enough money to raise a family someday.

  14. Education isnt there for everyone, as you said. There are many in the world today that do not have the right to learn like we do. Many people take school as a place they have to go, but we should want to go to.. not have too. Having an education is important, not for just the present... but for our future.

  15. Education and knowledge makes everything. Learning envelops the world together, and observation and the power of knowing what's out there helps us realize the issues we see and it aids us with the knowledge to fix them. Today, you can't even really get a job without a diploma or without being enrolled somewhere. Knowledge is so integrated into everything that makes up our lifestyle, it's an ignorance to our future if we let it pass us by. This chance only happens once, so embrace it with the importance it holds while you can. It can prove to provide alot of powerful lessons and innovative ideas and knowledge that can help us later down the road.
